Royal Ascot: Day 1

It’s one of the meetings of the year and it’s here at last.

And what a way to start: Frankel in the Queen Anne Stakes.

I get nervous when this horse runs because I’m desperate for him not to get beat (a bit like watching Everton). Hopefully it won’t happen today.

Big fields are a real feature of today’s card and you’ll be doing well to find a winner (apart from in the first race)!

Here are some punting pointers:

Queen Anne Stakes: Frankel should stroll home. But if you fancy an each-way nibble then Worthadd may sneak a place at a big price under Frankie Dettori. He has been working well.

King’s Stand Stakes: This is a nightmare and has more of a feel of a big handicap than a Group 1. Hard to say how the draw will affect things and it will be worth taking note of this with the rest of the meeting in mind. Last year’s winner Prohibit will like the easy ground and is available at 16/1 in some books (at the time of writing).

St James’s Palace Stakes: A huge field for a race that normally attracts a handful of runners. No apparent wonder horse here so Gabrial is a tentative e/w choice if he can overcome a poor draw.

Coventry Stakes: Look no further than Sir Prancealot. He bolted up at Sandown and can beat a typically strong field.

Ascot Stakes: Stamina is the watchword here and Cosimo De Medici has tonnes of it. He would be the each-way choice.

Windsor Castle Stakes: Another minefield but Lyric Ace could give Hannon/Hughes a juvenile double.

Who will be top jockey?

The betting for the top jockey prize at Ascot is dominated by messrs O’Brien, Hughes, Buick and Moore. But what about an outsider in a certain Mr F Dettori? He is as high as 25/1 in some books. Or there is Kieren Fallon, who is 33/1. Check out the latest top jockey odds on Oddschecker

Good luck!
