Ridge Ranger to strike in Stewards’ Cup

FOUR winners yesterday for this column and Rusumaat was chinned on the line but it could not be much tougher today with the Stewards’ Cup and the Stewards’ Sprint on the final day of Glorious Goodwood. RIDGE RANGER (3.45) has a likeable profile in the Stewards’ Cup as she is improving rapidly. The mare is well drawn and has a similar profile to last year’s winner Magical Memory.

2.00: Gamesome would be my selection if he was drawn low but he is out on a limb on the wrong side, if this week’s evidence is anything to go by. So a chance is taken with BARNET FAIR who is well handicapped on his best form and likes the track. He was second in the race last year and is 6lb lower.

2.35: A chance is taken with Mark Johnston’s BEAVERBROOK who has slipped in the weights to his lowest-ever mark, is well drawn, will like the ground and has the excellent James McDonald on board. The trainer’s horses can do little wrong this week and 25/1 seems sound each-way value.

3.10: This should be an absolute penalty kick for the brilliant MINDING.

4.20: Lockheed will be a warm order and the dogs have been barking about Ghayyar but a chance is taken with IMPHALA at a silly price on the basis that Marcus Tregoning always targets the juvenile races at Goodwood, His Argenterie finished third at 66/1 on her debut on Thursday.

4.55: Reputation was very unlucky at Pontefract last weekend and my head is saying go with him but WHITMAN has the look of a horse that we have not seen the best of this season. He was a useful juvenile but has been disappointing. Here is his chance to grab the lead from stall one and stay there.

6.00: BATHOS is one of my favourite horses and is a course winner. He ran okay last time and has a decent apprentice up in Ross Coakley. I worry the ground might be a little quick but if he produces his best he will be bang in the mix.

Be lucky!
