TODAY ENABLE (2.05) takes centre stage at Kempton as she makes her comeback from injury. It’s no betting heat as she jousts with Crystal Ocean but more a race to maintain a watching brief. Hopefully she comes through unscathed and can go to Paris next month to try to retain her Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe crown. From a punting viewpoint, MUBTASIM (2.45) is of much more interest at Ascot…
The four-year-old was a speedy juvenile and hasn’t quite recaptured his best form. But he has been running well recently without winning and has been edging his way down the weights.
Last weekend at Chelmsford he didn’t get the run of the race but still finished on the heels of the leaders. Fran Berry takes the ride and although Mubtasim needs holding up from off the pace, hopefully he won’t get too far back and can use his turn of foot. It is a highly competitive 20-runner handicap and will take some winning but 12/1 is decent each-way value.
The Sprint Cup at Haydock will be run on heavy ground for the second year running. Last year Harry Angel confounded any doubters by handling the conditions and winning impressively. He should double up if he has recovered from the injury sustained leaving the stalls at Royal Ascot.
But a more generous price is SANDS OF MALI (4.15), who is as big as 20/1. An unlucky second at Royal Ascot, he has disappointed in two runs since. But he is a horse who needs to get his own way and it is crucial he races handily. The rain will suit him and he is an outstanding each-way bet.
Other fancies today include:
Here Comes When (2.25 Haydock): Will relish the ground.
Exhort (5.25 Haydock): Another who will love the conditions.
Bedouin’s Story (5.35 Kempton): Easy winner at Thirsk last time and is improving fast.
Safarhi (8.45): Slowly improving and this looks a good opportunity with Martin Harley up.
Spiced (9.15): Another going the right way and can collect with normal improvement.
