Notebook: Horses to Follow April 27

FROM last week’s list both LEAR’S ROCK and RISK ADJUSTED hit the crossbar by coming second. Lear’s Rock looked a little unlucky as he was forced to race quite wide at Epsom before storming home. A longer trip would suit. Risk Adjusted was badly outpaced at Ripon before staying on behind a well-backed debutante. He needs to be upped to 6f next time. Here are some more likely beasts who have gone into the notebook in the past seven days…

GREENSALT: The Jumps season finished with the fanfare to AP McCoy on Saturday and while the focus is now firmly on the Flat, Greensalt caught the eye at sunny Hexham last week. A full brother to Raya Star, he appreciated the better ground to be a close third after a lay-off. He is consistent and should win on similar ground in the coming weeks.

MARASIM: Roger Varian has his string in good form and Marasim caught the eye when staying on well in a routine maiden at Pontefract over 6f. He was full of running up the hill in the final furlong and should relish 7f or a mile.

PREFECT: Was quite well supported on his debut at Kempton and was noted travelling well before staying on to be second behind the impressive winner Bold. Much more to come from this Paco Boy colt.

PIAZON: Kevin Ryan does so well with his sprinters and this fella was expected to need his first run of the season, which turned out to be the case at Epsom when he never landed a blow. He would prefer some ease in the ground and should pay his way over 5 and 6f.

WESTERN RESERVE: Shaped well at Chelmsford for Lady Cecil and Prince Khalid over a mile on his debut and he looks sure to win races this season.

MILE HIGH: This filly showed a great attitude when knuckling down and just faiing to reel in hot favourite Mezajy at Epsom. Compensation awaits.

Two other unraced horses to look out for. Richard Hannon hasn’t quite got going with his juveniles but expect a flurry of winners over the next few weeks. ILLUMINATE is a filly who is expected to run well on her debut. The same applies to GENRES, a three-year-old trained by the in-form John Gosden.
