Glorious Goodwood Day One

HARDLY glorious weather for it, but one of the best week’s racing of the year starts today. Rain-softened ground isn’t ideal in the height of summer and it has already scared off Gleneagles and a few other big guns at Glorious Goodwood. The forecast is kind for the rest of the week and I suspect the ground will be good or even quick by the end of the five days. Today’s first selection goes in a competitive opener…

..and is COLLABORATION (2.00). He’ll love the ground and if he is in the same nick as when he reeled off three quick victories in the spring then he will be hard to beat. His draw is not ideal but he has the tactical speed to gain a decent early pitch. He was only two lengths behind Mahsoob at Royal Ascot on ground that was way too quick and today’s conditions are much  more suitable. Last year’s winner Sennockian Star should run his usual solid race as he is 1lb lower than 2014 while Spa’s Dancer has each-way appeal.

TOBOGGAN’S FIRE (2.45 Beverley) is the other half of the double. She stayed on nicely on similar ground at Ayr and should be fitter and wiser today. The forecast rain will help her as her dam was a mudlark.

Back to Goodwood, here’s a few other fancies…

2.35: WELFORD has each-way appeal. He is bang in form and being a son of Dubawi should relish the ground. It’s a big step up but he should run a solid race.

3.45: NOTARISED is a course and distance winner and is another each-way suggestion for the red-hot Goodwood magician Mark Johnston.

4.55: GOODWOOD ZODIAC has been a huge eyecatcher in his last two runs and will take all the beating if he handles the ground.

Be lucky!
