MARCUS Tregoning often keeps one of his nicer two year olds back for the Haynes, Hanson & Clark Stakes at Newbury. Ethmaar, Elshadi, Taameer, Cavaleiro and, best of all, Nayef have all triumphed for the trainer since 1999. On Friday he saddles another nice prospect in CASTLE COMBE. The long-striding son of Dylan Thomas showed immense promise on his racecourse bow at Goodwood and Newbury’s more galloping track should be more suited to this scopey colt. The promising Red Galileo will prove hard to beat but Castle Combe should run a big race at a decent price.
A few others to watch on Friday…
Excedo Praecedo (1.30 Newbury): Has been working nicely and although he will come on for the run, he could go well first time out. A £150,000 yearling.
Continuum (2.30 new): Big and scopey, he won’t mind any further rain and is going the right way.
Persian Bolt (4.15 New): Showed immense promise on her debut and it will be no surprise if she steps up enough to win today. Her trainer rates this £67,000 yearling very highly.
McCarthy Mor (1.20 Ayr): This fella was fancied to run a big race on his debut by Richard Fahey but was disappointing. This is a retrieval mission and if he handles the soft ground at the Scottish track he could run a big race.
