Morning Digest: Bravo for Finian’s Oscar

Finian's Oscar
THIS weekend’s Chepstow meeting has gained traction in recent years as the real starting point for the proper National Hunt season. Cheltenham’s Showcase fixture or the Charlie Hall at Wetherby have traditionally signalled the changing of the guard. But the presence of Finian’s Oscar this weekend offers more lustre to Chepstow’s curtain raiser. He could make his chasing debut in the Listed novice chase at a track where Colin Tizzard has previously started off Thistlecrack, Native River and Cue Card over fences. Tizzard says Finian’s Oscar will run if they get nice ground at the course.
Tizzard and owner Alan Potts may also run Alary and Sizing Codelco at the Welsh track. Talking about his big guns, the trainer also revealed that Cue Card will go for the Charlie Hall, Native River will not be seen until Christmas and will target the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Grand National and Fox Norton will head to the Tingle Creek. Plans are fluid for Thistlecrack who is back in work after his injury that ruled him out of the 2017 Festival.
A couple of winners for this column yesterday in Golden Birthday and Pioneering although I’ve given up on Manchego and he will not become my latest cliff horse!

Frozon looks a hot punt

As for today, Fool For You (1.30 Catterick) (11/2 Betfred) showed good speed on debut and is from the in-form PJ McDonald-Karl Burke team. They have a huge day on Friday when Laurens bids to give the rider his first Group One win on the Flat in the Fillies’ Mile. I interviewed him for my day job recently and you can read it here.
Gorse (2.00 Catterick) (14/1, generally) has shown glimpses of promise in three runs and looks a bit overpriced at so might be worth a small each-way interest.
Elsewhere Frozon (5.55 Newcastle) (8/1 William Hill) is in rude health and has the excellent Jason Hart in the plate. He acts well on the sand and as long as he settles he should take some beating in a competitive race.
