Daily Double July 29

SHREWD punters tend to avoid the big festivals when they’re on and concentrate on the minor meetings. Finding winners at Cheltenham, Royal Ascot, Glorious Goodwood and Galway is more difficult than a routine card at, say, Ripon or Nottingham, so it usually pays to look elsewhere. With that in mind the two main tips are away from the Downs where the Group One Qatar Sussex Stakes looks to be at the mercy of Solow. The first selection…

… is HALEY BOP (2.20 Redcar). This filly showed up well on her debut before a poor run at Newmarket over 7f. She is back to 6f today and being by Dream Ahead and a mare who won on soft ground in Ireland, she should appreciate the cut in the ground. She is also trained by the in-form Mark Johnston and ridden by Silvestre de Sousa.

LOVELY SURPRISE (4.40 Redcar) is another who will relish the soft ground. She won well at Nottingham before struggling on firm ground at Ascot and being eased. Conditions are much more in her favour today.

For the record, here are a few Goodwood fancies, all of them EACH-WAY punts.

2.35: MEDRANO
3.10: COUGAR MOUNTAIN
3.45: MUHADATHAT
4.55: TAZFFIN
5.30: SAUCY MINX
