YESTERDAY the ground at Epsom was pretty testing and it promises to be the same again today. I’m pretty confident GALESBURG (2.00) can handle it. He left a good impression when he won at Leicester on good to soft over 6f and being a son of Shamardal he should enjoy the heavy conditions. Galesburg missed the break at York in a hot nursery last time so a line can be drawn through that run. The extra furlong will also play to his strengths.
Zahrat Narjis is the biggest danger to Galesburg and he is trained by Richard Fahey who has good chances at Epsom in two other races. KHELMAN (3.05) has slipped down the ratings to a winnable mark and will handle the ground, while IXELLES DIAMOND (3.35) is a course and distance winner on soft ground.
Elsewhere SCRUFFY MCGUFFY (2.20 Hamilton) is worth a watching brief. I was lucky enough to visit Ann Duffield’s yard a few weeks ago and this son of Firebreak has been pleasing the team at Sun Hill in his work. He will improve for his debut but could go well.
DARRELL RIVERS (2.50 Hamilton) has been knocking on the door and is upped to a mile after two strong-finishing performances at 7f. He looks primed to win.
One at Goodwood: SWORD OF THE LORD (5.25) should relish the soft ground and looks a good bet under the excellent Willie Twiston-Davies.
