NINE runners have been declared for the highlight of the Christmas sporting calendar – the King George VI Chase at Kempton. In its 63rd year, the William Hill-sponsored contest race has a £200,000 prize pot. And bookies can’t seem to separate leading contenders CUE CARD and DYNASTE. Favourites have a good record in the race and have won in seven of the last nine years. Here are the nine contenders…
AL FEROF: It would be no surprise if this flying grey gave Paul Nicholls his sixth success in eight years. But will he get the trip? His price of 7/2 looks a bit short for my liking.
CHAMPION COURT: Fourth last year, he looks overpriced at 33/1 and could give each-way backers a real run for their money.
CUE CARD: The Betfair Chase winner disappointed in this race last year when the wrong tactics were used. I expect him to make all and jump his rivals into the ground.
DYNASTE: A big danger and a course and distance winner. He could get closer to Cue Card than he did at Haydock.
LONG RUN: A great record in the race but not quite the force he was. Nevertheless, 9/1 is decent each-way value.
MENORAH: Very talented but would not want the ground too soft – 20/1 is about right.
MOUNT BENBULBEN: Highly regarded Irish raider who could be interesting if his jumping stands up.
RIVERSIDE THEATRE: Won well in the Peterborough but didn’t seem to stay in this race last year and is passed over.
SILVINIACO CONTI: Would be no surprise to see him win and he should be sharper for his seasonal reappearance.
VERDICT: CUE CARD to win
