by OLIVER DICKINSON. THE Cheltenham Festival has already been and gone this year, which means we’ll be fast approaching other major events in the horse racing calendar, with the Goodwood Festival being one of the most in demand. It takes place at the end of July and runs into August, playing host to a tonne of attendees, and working as one of the country’s most favourable horse racing festivals. Last year’s edition of Glorious Goodwood saw some massive winners and The Winners Enclosure were there every step of the way, keeping a keen eye on all the action, taking note of all the surprise winners, and providing their own Goodwood Tips through a specially-made page on their website. We take a look at all the 2017 winners with the biggest ante-post odds prior to the runs getting under way…
El Astronaute at 33/1 – New & Lingwood Handicap
Despite being the lowest priced of the three, El Astronaute did more than enough to pull off a shock in the sixth and final race of day one, beating 7/1 shot A Momentofmadness and 22/1 outsider Green Door to the top spot in a race where 15 horses all fought tooth and nail to finish in first place.
Breton Rock at 50/1 – Qatar Lennox Stakes
The midpoint in a day’s racing sees a slump in the excitement which comes from watching so much sporting action in the eyes of a lot of fans of the sport, but the Qatar Lennox Stakes did plenty to inject some much-needed energy back into Goodwood.
Priced at 4/1, Home Of The Brave was expected to stand as a firm favourite but could only reach second, leaving Breton Rock to pip him to the post at odds of 50/1, sending shockwaves through the Sussex countryside. Third place was taken by Suedois, who was priced at a still appetising 25/1 but the fact that a 50/1 shout could win this race says a lot about how unpredictable Glorious Goodwood can be when in full flow.
Thechildren’strust at 100/1 – Irish Thoroughbred Marketing EBF Maiden Stakes
All the big winners at Glorious Goodwood came on the opening day but nothing quite beats Thechildren’strust, who caused a massive shock in winning at odds of 100/1. Anyone who included this horse in their own Goodwood tips would surely struggle to beat their opening day’s betting activity!
Against-the-odds winner Thechildren’strust was almost outpointed by Rebel Streak, who was priced at 4/1, but fell short in only reaching second, then followed by Bombastic, who finished third at 12/1 odds but still overachieved from the 14 horses in contention.
The other three days only saw winners priced as high as 25/1, which is an indication of how action-packed 2017’s Day One was, so hopefully we’ll be seeing more upsets when this year’s edition of Goodwood kicks off on 31st July.
