THE second that Cheltenham ends, I start thinking about the Grand National. The next declaration stage is tomorrow and the weights are expected to rise with the likely defection of Albertas Run (11st 8lb). With doubts about Imperial Commander (11st 6lb), it could leave Quito De La Roque and What A Friend with top weight on 11st 5lbs, and spark a probable rise of 5lb. I also take my hat off to BetVictor who have announced they are going Non Runner No Bet from 9am today on the Aintree race. Fair play!
Their PR maestro Charlie McCann explained: “We have been Non Runner Free Bet since before the announcement of the weights last month, but we want to give punters the added insurance post-Cheltenham that they can bet on the Aintree showpiece safe in the knowledge that they will get their money back if their selection fails to make the line-up next month. Note this offer is for both our each-way and win-only books.”
Irish challengers dominate the head of the ante-post market for the National with On His Own currently the 8/1 favourite with BV and Prince de Beauchene on 10/1. Cappa Bleu currently heads the English challenge on 14s.
