I HAVE been waiting with Bated Breath for Roger Charlton’s star sprinter to get his head in front in a Group One contest.
But today could finally be the day for Bated Breath. Conditions should be ok, despite the rain yesterday and this morning, and he should get the decent ground he likes in the Nunthorpe. Ortensia and the unbeaten Pearl Secret look the main dangers.
Elsewhere my banker of the day is Wentworth in the Convivial Maiden. Richard Hannon’s son of Acclamation was unlucky on his debut at Goodwood where he was expected to deliver. Highly thought of, he should gain compensaiton today before going on to much better things. He is also one of our horses to follow in our Two-Year-Old Notebook column.
Roger Charlton could initiate a double with the progressive Silver Lime in the opener. He landed a nice touch at Glorious Godowood after a lay-off and looks capable of following up, while Morawij looks the one to beat in a sub-standard Gimcrack.
There is plenty of good racing elsewhere and some promising juveniles on show, especially at Newmarket. Raskova is highly regarded and could improve enough from her debut to win the opener, while Flawless Beauty is also well thought of and should go close in the next.
Ann Duffield is enjoying a good run with her two-year-olds and Yorkshire Icon makes the journey from Middleham in the mile nursery and should run very well.
